When which app is the better choice

WorkingHours: The closest relative: local, no account, with geofencing. If you want to continue editing the same data on Windows or Mac and the Pro purchase does not bother you, it is a good choice. WorkFlow is the choice when the automation should be free and you need an hours account with a target per day.

timeGOAT: The other app here that clocks in by itself at the workplace, without an account and with data on the device. The automation belongs to the PRO subscription, though, and the Android app has not been updated since September 2025.

Toggl: For freelancers and teams billing projects and clients; for new users Toggl Track lives on in the product Toggl. Strong reports and integrations, but no automatic clocking at the workplace, and always with an account and cloud.

Clockify: A generous free plan for teams up to five, timers, timesheets, many integrations. No automatic clocking by geofence; GPS locations are a Pro feature: admins see the team's locations, team members their own.

timr: A company solution from Austria, built for employers tracking staff. Its geofence checks whether someone is in the right place when clocking in; it does not clock in by itself. For one person who only wants their own hours, the account, price and cloud model is more than necessary.

Free, private time tracking: what matters

If you want to keep your own hours without an app chosen by your employer, you do not need a company solution. Five questions separate the apps that fit from those that do not:

Do I need an account?

With an account, your working times usually live with the vendor. Check account and storage separately, though: apps can transfer or sync data without an account too. If the data stays on the phone only, the backup is up to you.

What does the free version really cover?

Many free plans are made for small teams and limit users, features or reports. For one person, what counts is whether the feature you need every day is in the free part, such as automatic clocking.

Are there ads?

Ads in a time tracker usually mean that ad networks receive data about how the app is used. For an app that knows when you work where, the privacy policy is worth a look.

Does it clock in by itself?

If you have to remember to clock in every morning, one day you will forget. Automatic clocking at the workplace by geofencing takes that off you, without the app having to record your location all the time.

Can I get my hours out again?

For your employer, the payroll office or a dispute about overtime you need an export, ideally a PDF to sign and a CSV. Without an export, the hours are stuck in the app.

Honestly: WorkFlow does less than these apps. No projects, no invoices, no teams, no iPhone. It does one thing, your own working time, and that without an account, cloud, ads or subscription.
