Converting in Excel
Excel stores a time as a fraction of a day. Times 24 turns it into decimal hours, divided by 24 back into a time.
- Time to decimal hours
=A1*247:45 in A1 gives 7.75.- Hours from start to end
=(B1-A1)*2407:45 to 17:15 gives 9.5.- Shift past midnight
=MOD(B1-A1,1)*2422:00 to 06:00 gives 8.- Decimal hours to a time
=A1/248.2 gives 8:12, cell formatted as [h]:mm.
Format the result cell of a decimal hour as a number, or Excel shows it as a time again. In a German Excel, MOD is called REST and arguments are separated by a semicolon.
What are industrial minutes?
In German-speaking countries a hundredth of an hour is called an industrial minute (Industrieminute). An hour has 100 of them, and one lasts 36 seconds. It is the same idea as decimal hours: time counted in tenths and hundredths instead of sixtieths.[1]
The point is that times can be added like ordinary numbers and multiplied by an hourly rate. That is why payroll, time clocks, job costing and many timesheets use decimal hours: 0.75 hours are 75 industrial minutes.
Examples from a working week
- Working out pay. 7 hours 30 minutes at 16.50 an hour: 7.5 × 16.50 = 123.75. Calculating with 7.30 by mistake gives 120.45, which is 3.30 short.
- Reading a timesheet. If the net column says 8.20, you worked 8 hours and 12 minutes. A balance of +1.20 hours is 1 hour and 12 minutes.
- Adding up a week. 8:15 + 7:45 + 8:30 + 8:00 + 6:50 gives 39:20, in decimal hours 8.25 + 7.75 + 8.5 + 8 + 6.83 = 39.33 hours.
- Staying exact. Calculate with whole minutes and round only the result. Rounding every line to two decimals collects small errors for minute values not divisible by 3.
Or stop calculating altogether.
